Product Description

Against all odds, Katniss Everdeen has survived the Hunger Games twice. But now that she’s made it out of the bloody arena alive, she’s still not safe. The Capitol is angry. The Capitol wants revenge. Who do they think should pay for the unrest? Katniss. And what’s worse, President Snow has made it clear that no one else is safe either. Not Katniss’s family, not her friends, not the people of District 12. Powerful and haunting, this thrilling final installment of Suzanne Collins’s groundbreaking The Hunger Games trilogy promises to be one of the most talked about books of the year.

1 out of 5 stars Should have never read   September 7, 2010
Icefox000 (Cedar City, UT)
First off, let me say that my review will contain SPOILERS. Next, let me say that I really enjoyed the first two books of this serious. And then, let me say that this book is one of the worst books I have read in a long time. I feel as if the author of this book and no idea how to finish her trilogy so she decided to write a philosophical young adult book about the tragedy of war instead of focusing on what really matters...the story and the characters within the story!!! Maybe if she would have written the book well it may have worked, but this book was written so bad that I ended up having to skim through several pages because of how bored I was.

Let me make a list of things that were written terribly. Again let me warn that there are spoilers:

1. Katniss, who was once a strong feminine character that I respected, turned into a heartless and boring person who had no direction in this book. She only had one brief action scene (way to go on shooting the bomber there Katniss, a real doozy!), and the way she supports Peeta throughout the book is reminiscent of how I would treat Hitler if I were to live in his day. Also, how many times in this book was Katniss knocked out and then awoke in a hospital bed or in a similar setting? At least four times! Wow! weak sauce! I have so much to say on how much I hated Katniss in this book that I will just move on.

2. Peeta's story also sucked in this book. I understand torture sucks, but what made Peeta cool was HIS character. Peeta may as well have died and have come back as some minor character who hates Katniss for some reason. His rescue from his torturers was not even described in the book. It was like the author was like "hmmm, how will I get Peeta back? I know, Ill just have some people say they will rescue him and then they will within one chapter!". That was so anticlimactic and lame.

3. The love triange. It was lame. It was a side story. May has well have not been there. It was contained within the last ten pages. Gale is out of the picture and Katniss and Peeta live a depressing life in misery. Yay.

4. The death of other characters in the book was completely predictable and stupid. "Here are some random characters everyone for me to kill off...oh and I guess I could kill off Finnick in a really stupid way." Honestly, how stupid does Suzanne think we all are?

5. How random of an enemy was Coin? Katniss kills her before she kills Snow? For two straight books the main bad honcho was Snow and he was completely replaced by Coin who turns out to be even more heartless by killing tons of little children and wanting to start the games back up. Oh, and why did Katniss agree to that? Some people say it was her only way to get close to Coin but that is just lame. The book should be more clear about Katniss's motives instead of leaving the interpretation to the reader.

I have many other reasons to hate this book but my fingers are getting tired now. Straight up, this book sucks. Not sure why many have giving this book good reviews.. I guess they are seeing something I don't. I would have preferred to have read another person's interpretation of what happened then read this filth. I think I will just write a short summary of what I believe should have happened at the end of book two and then I will hold that as cannon as to what really happened instead of ever picking this book up again.

1 out of 5 stars Ms. Collins, I Demand a Completely Different Ending to this Trilogy!   September 7, 2010
Miss Kardashian (Florida)
I would like to start off by stating The Hunger Games was an awesome book. With that being said, I would like to state that Catching Fire was one of the BEST books I have ever read. So what does that leave me thinking? That with the arrival of Mockingjay, and the pattern I have picked up on means that I will get to read one of the best books ever written...this was definitely not the case.

I am disappointed because Mockingjay does not provide a substantial ending to the climax built by its successors. Why, you ask. Because of the following reasons (there are no spoilers):

1.) Katniss is not Katniss in the third book. She is not the tough tribute, who underneath all her rage really has a big heart. She is not the "fighting for the right reasons" girl we came to know and love.

2.) Mockingjay is an entirely different book than the previous two. Mockingjay is a book about war. Pure, unemotional accounts of war. If you're into that, it will be a great read.

3.) The ending was awful. Sure, no one was expecting the ending to be completely happy. But after all the author puts you through, the ending makes you feel as if the rebellion wasn't worth the trouble. Bring back the capitol, the separated districts- even the hunger games for crying out loud! Because I felt that everyone was much happier then.

To be honest I read the previous two books in less than a week each. This one took me much longer. That says enough on its own, for me.

So I repeat Ms. Collins, we promise to forgive you, but please write us a new ending to your trilogy!!!

5 out of 5 stars Completely Satisfying   September 7, 2010

It was a great conclusion to the trilogy and I had a hard time putting the book down. It was adventurous, romantic, sad, sweet, and fanciful. While I wasn't in love with all the characters, I definitely felt connected to them. And although it had a great ending, it was a sad reminder that sometimes we can't fight the inevitable but taking courage in ourselves and standing up for what is right can make a difference in this world.

1 out of 5 stars War is hell, but does reading have to be??   September 7, 2010
NYATTORNEY (New York, NY)
(Spoiler alert).I just finished reading Mockingjay and had to write a review because I am floored at how bad this bad is considering I absolutely loved the first two books in the series. I understand that war is not fun and that this series is not Harry Potter, but I never expected this book to be so dark and well, just flat out not fun. The first two books were serious, but action packed and had a certain momentum that kept the pages turning much the same way the Harry Potter series did. But this book is so far different in tone that it's really shocking and the only thing I can really compare it to is the movie Apocalypse Now because it is such a pyschological nightmare. the only difference is that I loved Apocalpyse now, but Mockingjay is truly one of the worst sequels I have ever read. The things Katniss has to endure in this book (district 13 basically as bad as the capital, Peta becoming crazy, her sister being killed in the end) is just flat out brutal. I guess I am naive because I expected this book to be kind of Star Warsish with the districts (the rebels) taking on and beating the evil capital in a thrilling conclusion. I figured Gale or Peta would die heroically and Katniss would live happily ever after with the survivor. But instead Katniss ends up broken both mentally and physically. All I can really say in conclusion is that I had some much high hopes for this book, but in the end it is truly one of the most bizzarre, truly ugly novels I have ever read and I will no longer be able to recommend this series to friends knowing how it all concludes

this book was a serious disappointment, it didn't even feel like it belonged with the other books. i had such high expectations after the other two, but this one left me depressed and wishing i hadn't read it.
